Much of the Wasatch Front of northern Utah is
underlain by saturated sandy sediments that are prone to liquefaction
during moderate and large earthquakes. Thirteen liquefaction-induced
landslides have been identified along the Wasatch Front by previous
researchers, but development has proceeded in these areas with little
consideration of the hazards from these landslides. This investigation
assesses the hazard these features pose by determining if they are
indeed liquefaction-induced landslides, and determines their potential
for movement during future earthquakes.

landslides in Provo, North Salt Lake, Layton, and elsewhere with
ten case histories. Recommends land-use approaches for future hillside

ground-water-level fluctuations, and recommends new approaches for
landslide investigations for use by geotechnical engineers and geologists

As Utah's population grows, more development is
occurring on potentially unstable slopes. Circular 92 was developed
to assist geologists and geotechnical engineers in performing landslide-hazard
studies. This document presents guidelines for three levels of landslide-hazard
evaluation (geologic, preliminary geotechnical-engineering, and
detailed geotechnical-engineering), and includes a checklist that
will be used by the UGS for technical reviews, at the request of
local-government agencies, of landslide-hazard reports prepared
by consultants.

Guidelines for the geologic evaluation of debris-flow hazards

The Utah Geological Survey (UGS) developed these
guidelines to help geologists evaluate debris-flow hazards on alluvial
fans to ensure safe development. Debris-flow-hazard evaluations
are particularly important because alluvial fans are the primary
sites of debris-flow deposition and are also favored sites for development.
The purpose of a debris-flow-hazard evaluation is to characterize
the hazard and provide design parameters for risk reduction. The
UGS recommends critical facilities and structures for human occupancy
not be placed in active debris-flow travel and deposition areas
unless the risk is reduced to an acceptable level.

Preliminary geotechnical-engineering slope-stability investigation

The Pine Ridge landslide is the largest of several
deep-seated late Holocene landslides in Timber Lakes Estates. In
either the winter or early spring 1985-86, a part of this slide
reactivated as a deep-seated slump. Geomorphic evidence suggests
recurrent late Holocene movement in the 1985-86 slump area that
has likely caused a reduction of shear strengths to residual values
adjacent to slip surfaces in the slump. We believe the likelihood
of future movement of the entire slide is low; however, this does
not preclude the possibility of movement if the area experiences
earthquake ground shaking or if a deep weak layer is present.

landslide in the Spanish Fork canyon, and is the largest active
