Salt Lake Valley is the main population and industrial center in the State of Utah. Maintenance of an adequate supply of water suitable for domestic use is one of the most important factors in sustaining the current population and industrial activity and in allowing for continued economic growth.

The objects of this study were (1) to better define the chemical quality of water in shallow sediments and underlying confining units; (2) to determine the hydrologic properties of shallow sediments and underlying confining units; (3) to better define the entire ground-water/hydrochemical flow system; and (4) to evaluate the movement of poor-quality water and the effects of changes in water use on ground-water quality.
