Liquefaction Hazards in Utah (PI-100)

Earthquake-triggered liquefaction can cause extensive damage and loss of life. While Utah has historically experienced liquefaction-producing earthquakes, it has thus far escaped significant damage. However, the densely populated Wasatch Front region has a 93% probability of one or more earthquakes capable of generating liquefaction in the next 50 years. This coupled with large liquefaction-susceptible areas equates to a significant risk within the lifetime of the majority of residents.
