As requested by the Davis County Health Department, the Utah Geological Survey has mapped radon hazard potential for southern Davis County, Utah. This 1:24,000-scale map covers the southern portion of Davis County, including the cities of North Salt Lake, Woods Cross, Bountiful, West Bountiful, Centerville, and the southern portion of Farmington. The map provides a categorized hazard estimate of radon based on underlying geologic conditions. This map does not characterize indoor radon levels, but indicates areas where geologic, soil, and groundwater conditions are favorable for increased indoor radon hazard. Indoor radon levels can also be affected by highly variable, non-geologic factors such as building materials and foundation openings; therefore, indoor radon levels can vary greatly between structures located in the same hazard category, making radon testing crucial. Radon hazard potential mapping is designed to raise awareness of the hazard, increase communication and education regarding the complexity of radon, and ultimately increase testing in individual buildings.
