It has been observed that cleats in coal are one of several geologic features that affect methane emission from coal. This report summarizes the results of an investigation conducted in the Castle Gate No.3 Mine, Carbon County, Utah. The mine is one of four mines selected for the University of Utah Project: Formation and Retention of Methane in Coal. Topics discussed include: cleat and joint systems in the underground (face cleat N.55? W.) and in surface exposures (major N.65? W.), collection of 3 oriented samples, megascopic and microscopic description of the coal (major lithotype component -bright clarain -and rank -high volatile bituminous A), residual gas content determination (no measurable values), evaluation of coking properties (Composition Balance Index=1.17 and Rank Index=2.65), proximate analysis and density (mean=1.38 glcm3) and porosity determination (mean 1.32%).
