Isolated locations within the Escalante Valley of southwestern Utah exhibit higher than normal ground-water temperatures. The sources of geothermal fluid, which cause the elevated temperatures, are not well understood. Because of this uncertainty and because of the success of self-potential and electrical resistivity surveys in mapping the zone of up-flowing thermal fluids at Newcastle on the southeastern side of the Escalante Valley (Ross and others, 1990), we believed that electrical resistivity and self-potential surveys would be useful at other suspect locations in the Escalante Valley. This report describes a self-potential study of part of the Wood Ranch located about 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of Zane, a siding along a portion of the Union Pacific rail line in Iron County, Utah.
