The Antelope Island South quadrangle includes Great Salt Lake, the southeast shore of Great Salt Lake, and the southernmost part of Antelope Island. The map area contains the northern part of the Kennecott Utah Copper, LLC tailings impoundment, Interstate 80, and migratory bird refuges. The only bedrock exposed in the quadrangle is on Antelope Island. Bedrock includes Paleoproterozoic Farmington Canyon Complex and a small exposure of Miocene Salt Lake Formation. The valley floor is covered by Quaternary lacustrine, deltaic, alluvial, and marsh deposits. The quadrangle also includes the Holocene-active Antelope Island segment of the Great Salt Lake fault zone located west of Antelope Island. Lacustrine deposits are from late Pleistocene Lake Bonneville (30 to 13 ka), the Gilbert-episode lake (~11.5 ka), and Holocene Great Salt Lake (since ~11 ka). Alluvial and deltaic features include active stream deposits, and paleo-Jordan River deposits and paleodeltas.
