The Soldiers Pass quadrangle encompasses the southern half of the Lake Mountains and adjacent area west of Utah Lake. Soldiers Pass itself separates the main mountain range from a series of low hills to the south. Exposed sedimentary rocks are dominated by shallow-marine limestone and sandstone of Mississippian to Pennsylvanian age that were folded into a broad syncline and now exposed in the core of the range; smaller, righter folds that involve rocks as old as Devonian are present on the flanks of the syncline. The Late Cenozoic transition from subduction-related to extension-related volcanism is recorded in the Soldiers Pass volcanic field in the map area. A variety of late Tertiary and Quaternary deposits record the evolution of the present landscape; previously unidentified fault scarps on the East Cedar Valley fault zone were also mapped.

This geologic map provides basic geologic information necessary to further evaluate geologic hazards and resources in the area, and to gain an understanding of the geology upon which this landscape developed.
